Take a Hike

This weekend, in an effort to take advantage of the lovely early summer weather, we decided to strap on the Camelbaks and hit the trail. The Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenways Trail, to be more specific. The trail starts at the Susquehanna Electric Company and continues on for 3 miles to the state park. The majority of the trail has been improved so the walking is very easy. Since we walked out and back we did about 6 miles.

What's Up Doc? Your weight?

At a recent meeting of doctors to discuss the nation's obesity problem, the question of hypocrisy came up with some of the doctors telling their patients to slim down where themselves obese. I think this can carry over easy to the healthcare field in general where I've seen a number of large nurses too! Read more about the meeting...

Taking Steps One at a Time

Last week on the Skinny Daily Post, Juju discussed the 10,000 steps a day that are recommended, and her own struggles to come even close to that number.

What she found was that she only got in about 700 steps a day when an intentional walk or run was not scheduled. In her own words: "Less than normal. Fewer than human. I’m motionless." Even with regular walking, for walkings sake, she got in only 7000. This peaked my curiousity enough to strap on my own Sportline Talking Pedometer purchased at Target a while back, and see how I do. The good news is that the cubefarm I'm in is huge, about 30,000 sq feet, I think. So everything is far away...the restroom, the water, and well, the restroom again after the water.

So by 10 am I've walked a measily 847 steps. It'll be interesting to see what I end up with by the end of the day.

Slowly Shedding

Today I hopped onto the scale and it showed some positive results even after the Friday night happy hour fiasco (rounds of shots, loaded nachos) and Papa John's pizza while painting at home this weekend. Maybe these wide swings in calories from weekday to weekend will keep my body from getting into anything close to a routine.

Friday I fly "home" to visit the family for a long weekend. I'll very likely NOT post while away due to the <> dial-up access.

Meal Prep...the easy way

We've been using our meal preparation service, Diet to Go, for about three weeks now. I've been extremely happy with this service. The food is good and healthy, it is filling, and best of all, convenient. The 1200 calorie plan is perfect for me as I add in a salad for dinner, a low-fat ice cream treat for dessert, and an occasional yogurt. I'm glad that I am on the lower cal-plan so I can have some freedom for treats. And, there are some quick ways to really improve on what is already there. For example, one of the dinners was a chicken pizza. Well, we busted out our pizza stone to warm it up and it was really tasty. I almost always toast the bread or roll for lunch when I'm at work. I always put my dinner in a real plate or bowl so it doesn't feel like eating at TV dinner. A little salt and pepper go a long way, and the occasional splash of Tabasco, or garlic chili sauce, go a long way to add a little zip.

Best of all, they added a new pickup location about 3 minutes from my apartment (the previous one was 10 minutes) and now that several people at the office are willing to try it, we might see if we can become our own distribution center!

Vacation Dieting

How does one diet when on vacation. Or better yet, how does one diet when going to the south where pork butt BBQ and rum punch are the menu?

A little hickup in the diet routine-a three day trip to Alabama. I think Jared would have approved of our subway lunch on day one, and even our grilled shrimp poboy could have been worse...it could have been fried.

The big problem was the copious amount of alcohol consumed by all over the last two days of the trip. We were tasked with mixing up the rum punch for the next day's festivities-a recipe that included the following:

3 1.5 liter bottles of dark rum
2 1.5 liter bottles of light rum
3 gallons of Orange Juice
4 Large cans of Pineapple Juice
1.5 bottles of grenidine
15 seconds of Bitters
1 can of beer (for good luck?)
.5 bottle of sour mix

All mixed together in a 10 gallon Gatorade jug. Tasted and tweaked as necessary..which meant, frequently. This was followed by us mixing a second batch that included a bottle of 150 proof Everclear (and we couldn't even taste the difference). Scary!

We've certainly done worse while the (Mardi Gras week, for example) but I came back feeling heavy and sluggish, and a little like I needed to detox. Happily when I weighed myself this morning I have recovered from the shock to my system and and back on the losing side of things.
