How does one diet when on vacation. Or better yet, how does one diet when going to the south where pork butt BBQ and rum punch are the menu?
A little hickup in the diet routine-a three day trip to Alabama. I think Jared would have approved of our subway lunch on day one, and even our grilled shrimp poboy could have been worse...it could have been fried.
The big problem was the copious amount of alcohol consumed by all over the last two days of the trip. We were tasked with mixing up the rum punch for the next day's festivities-a recipe that included the following:
3 1.5 liter bottles of dark rum
2 1.5 liter bottles of light rum
3 gallons of Orange Juice
4 Large cans of Pineapple Juice
1.5 bottles of grenidine
15 seconds of Bitters
1 can of beer (for good luck?)
.5 bottle of sour mix
All mixed together in a 10 gallon Gatorade jug. Tasted and tweaked as necessary..which meant, frequently. This was followed by us mixing a second batch that included a bottle of 150 proof Everclear (and we couldn't even taste the difference). Scary!
We've certainly done worse while the (Mardi Gras week, for example) but I came back feeling heavy and sluggish, and a little like I needed to detox. Happily when I weighed myself this morning I have recovered from the shock to my system and and back on the losing side of things.

Don't let yourself get bored because there was so much to do on vacation. Keeping yourself busy with fun activities should keep you from snacking too much.
When you are out sightseeing, food is the last thing on your mind. Yet when it is mealtime, you usually want to eat at a new restaurant and try the new fare. I drink at least two glasses of water before the meal ever gets there. That fills my stomach us some. I skip the appetizers and always get a salad. I know how boring salads are, but if you really don't want to overindulge, that is the way to go.
I start with a very light breakfast, like yogurt or a piece of fruit. Usually I eat lunch at a restaurant if I'm on vacation, so I try to eat something light, like a salad or soup, or even a sandwich. I realize that is kind of boring, especially at a nice restaurant, but it works. Then at dinner I splurge on whatever I want. I usually manage to stay at my pre-vacation weight. However, I do not eat a whole basket of bread that is placed in front of me like some restaurants will do. I usually eat one, possibly two pieces and push the basket aside. I never eat my entire meal either.
